Mike and Zac successfully tested our RFD900 long-range comms link this weekend at a distance of 7.5km.

The test was conducted at Warnbro sound. Mike set up the UAV on the southern-side, and Zac set up the ground control station at the northern-side.

While the UAV was on the ground, we were able to establish a connection, but with reduced strength. When the UAV was flown to an altitude of 100m, we got full strength for the comms link.

Landing the UAV was quite tough as the ground was quite hilly. The help with this only one battery pack was used which made the UAV lighter and landing easier.

We are very happy with these results. Our comms link is required to communicate over a long range of up to 7km during the competition, and we are very happy that we have a reliable link that will be able to meet this need.

The RFD900 unit at the ground control station was set to 27 dBm transmit power and had a 3 dBi antenna giving an EIRP of 30 dBm. The ground station antenna was mounted on a 4m mast. The RFD900 unit on the UAV was set to 28 dBm transmit power and had a 2 dBi antenna giving an EIRP of 30 dBm.
